Great Deals on Boneless Pork Sirloin! Canning Guide

I just picked up some boneless pork sirloin tips on sale at Lin's...buy one get one free. Check out the deals at Davis' as well...they often have a lot of variety of meats on sale. I'm pretty sure they'd be having similar deals at other stores. They come in either roasts or chops and you have to match them. Like with the chicken (that's still on sale) these would be great to freeze, freeze dry or bottle. Here is a canning guide for meats if you choose the latter: https://extension.usu.edu/.../canning-meats-poultry-seafood (from this site: https://extension.usu.edu/preserve-the-harvest/canning Pay attention, among other things, to the elevation guides for pressure canners. Some have dials and some have the little weights. If you have the kind with a weight, which is the most common, use the 15 lb psi because we are over 1000 ft in elevation. Remember! Canned meats don't have to be boring. There are lots of ideas if you search. Here are a couple of examples: http...

Take Advantage of Chicken On Sale Now

Image
Hello Friends! How are y'all coming on the goal to make a loaf of homemade bread? (See the newsletter, last post). We just wanted to mention that chicken is on sale at some of the grocery stores. It is likely to go way up in price due to shortages (because of shortages of feed ingredients, it may be that farmers are selling off what they have a low prices, but that it will result in predicted shortages later on). It may be a good idea to buy some and put it in your freezer. If you have a steam canner, you might be glad if you bottle a bunch of it. Just thought you'd like to know. By the way, everyone. A member of our district (who shall be here left name- and location-less in case severe shortages occur and everyone wants to raid their storeroom...and if you recognize their kitchen they request that you KEEP IT TO YOURSELF! 😉 ) sent us the following (along with the pics): "We were able to get 115 lbs @ 1.99/lb. This chicken is SUPER for sandwiches, salads, soups, tacos...

DISTRICT 10 Preparedness Newsletter - January 2023

Hello Members of District 10! Here is our latest Preparedness Letter. It is much shorter than they have been in the past, and will be from here on out. In each newsletter we are going to have one main focus on something to help us all be more capable, including something to learn or practice. We will also post some storage goals related to that focus. Please read the whole thing and as you try things out, or if you have experience in that area that would be good to pass on, please comment below! Thank You! “Preparedness, when properly pursued, is a way of life, not a sudden spectacular program.” -Spencer W. Kimball GOALS: Practice: Bake a loaf of homemade bread (or rolls)! -using- whole grain flour …which you grind at home if possible; and you still get kudos if you add white flour. Extra kudos if you also make a loaf of sourdough! …and if you have a sourdough start and are willing to share please let us know!  (Incidentally, you can buy whole wheat flour if you don't have a grinde...

What To Do, and something NOT to Rely On, in case of a Nuclear Disaster:

Hi folks! A while back we posted the availability of “Nuke Pills” with an order going to YFSM. Afterwards a discussion (a friendly one!) ensued about the usefulness of said “Nuke Pills”. A member of our DISTRICT 10 is a retired nuclear physicist and researcher for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (he had a lot to do with creating the “Atomic Museum” in Las Vegas which, by all accounts, is a fascinating place to visit https://www.atomicmuseum.vegas/ ). During his career he has focused a lot of attention on the effects of nuclear fallout, and sent us a bit of what he has found on “Nuke Pills”. This is for your education only, so you can decide what you get to do about it…it is in NO WAY a refutation of anyone making said pills available. We deeply appreciate all and any of those who make it easier to obtain food storage or preparedness items. Before I copy/paste the findings below, here is a link that should help you know what to do in case of nuclear fallout (one thing our res...

New Military Surplus Outlet in Hurricane!

There is a new military surplus outlet in Hurricane! It's very small but has a lot of cool stuff for the prep-minded; all kinds of great stuff for bug-out bags and 72-hour kits, backpack options, water purification, electrolytes, first aid kits and items, and so on. We didn't see any machine guns but you probably really don't need one. 😆 It's at about 62 West State Street right next to Peruvian Flavors: https://www.thegeneralists.net

Possible Food Shortages for 2023

Almost everything is being blamed on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This YouTube-approved video does a skillful job of maneuvering other possibilities that might awaken political sensibilities, but does a fair job of presenting possibilities you might want to prepare for. This is not posted to cause panic, but your buying priorities might shift as you consider family needs. When purchasing some of the things mentioned, you might want to get extra to go along with your usual supply (copy/paste): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYXCcFQVfFw&list=WL&index=94&t=57s

In a Jan. 2nd email to members DISTRICT 10 Preparedness I mentioned that I would no longer be posting the Back to Basics newsletters or the various fliers and handouts on this blog because it's very difficult to upload them and the quality renders them almost unreadable. However, I discovered that I can convert all these documents to PDFs and create a URL link that readers can copy/paste into a new tab. It works well. So, you can get copies of those things by clicking the page links above.
