Reminder and Invitation...

Hello Friends. This is a reminder for the 30 Hour Off-Grid Challenge starting this Friday at 4 p.m. running through Saturday at 10 p.m. You can read all about it on one of the many handouts we’ve shared, in one or two of the emails that have come from toddfurse@gmail.com , at https://www.facebook.com/groups/699066361344927 or at https://prep10hurricane.blogspot.com/ (scroll down the latter two for materials and ways to become prepared). Please pay attention to any warnings or disclaimers we have shared. We strongly encourage the highest level of participation you and your family are able to safely accomplish so that you can test your state of emergency preparedness (including bits of spiritual and emotional resiliency). This is an activity for learning. We have tentatively planned an informal get-together at the Pavillion behind the Chapel at 1178 S 700 W in Hurricane on Sunday, March 9 th at 6 p.m. Feel free to bring snacks or treats to share with others (we hope a lot of ...

A Note of Caution...

A NOTE OF CAUTION for the upcoming 30 Hour Off-Grid Challenge. We DO NOT encourage anyone to actually shut off their power or natural gas or water or anything. If you insist, make sure YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING. It's okay just to PRETEND it's all shut off and not use items that depend on "the grid" (but, dang it, don't look at your clock unless it's battery operated ;) ). For natural gas, don't turn it off unless you know EXACTLY how to safely re-light things. If you have a generator or battery pack you want to try out for the electrical, you could just use cords and plug things into it (especially your refrigerator). If you have had a professionally installed transfer switch and want to use a generator to bypass your circuit breakers, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CORRECT PROCESS to activate and de-activate it. And, just another reminder...always have a wrench that can shut off your natural gas near the main valve in case of an earthquake or other po...

Yet another potty post (sorry folks 😉 )

This is an example of a very simple method of dealing with human waste in a situation where regular sewage service my be compromised. Lots of people just pick up the seat part at a camping store (YFSM might have them) and a 5 gallon bucket, but the advantage of this kit is the added disposal items. Find a "privacy tent" on Amazon, and maybe a "urine hat" if it'll fit (for health reasons it is always best to separate "#1" and "#2", especially over long periods), and you'd be set! Incidentally, privacy tents are great for a "camping shower" as well (the ones with the thick plastic bag that allows you to heat water in the sun for a warm shower), if it's one where you can zip out the floor and if it's built to hold a bag-full of water. https://www.legacyfoodstorage.com/products/complete-toilet-set-with-ecogel

Composting Human Waste...the Right Bags...

The next few posts are about Off-Grid ways to dispose of human waste. Whether you're using a simple 5-Gallon Bucket with bags and a toilet seat, or a fancy camping toilet you buy, or just adjusting how you use the toilet in your own house (all posted below), the right kinds of bags will make a difference. Here are a couple of products. As you scroll and/or search for your own solutions, keep in mind that it's best, for health reasons, to keep the #1 and #2 separate if at all possible: https://greenpaperproducts.com/collections/compostable-bags/compostable-trash-bags?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2jHuKjERooiA0LK0seXOvANgClQCBTQDtuAxU2Zw5tZexBSDwNJWHoOfE_aem_KBz682CDU8t1PXRAf8j3Yg or these... https://www.amazon.com/s?k=compostable+toilet+bags&crid=TXA7WSI38J64&sprefix=compostable+toilet+ba%2Caps%2C155&ref=nb_sb_ss_mvt-t8-ranker_1_21

One Great Potty Product Example:
