There is nothing better than a friend, unless it’s a friend with chocolate.” – Linda Grayson

Goals:

Practice:

Plan a neighborhood party for this Summer

…and carry it out

Short Term Preparedness:

Practice cooking with an alternative cooking method, and share what you learn with a neighbor.

Long Term Storage:

Packaged, freeze-dried emergency meals, such as MREs or meals from a place like https://valleyfoodstorage.com/ (or some you’ve made with your own freeze-dryer)

Prep Equipment:

Obtain cooking equipment for an alternative cooking method that you don’t already own, such as with a Dutch oven, Wonder Oven (see back), solar oven, portable propane stove, butane back-packing cooker, and so on.

Connect:

Invite someone on your block who you don’t know very well over to dinner, or go out to dinner with them. Do this a couple of times this year with different neighbors. Strike up a conversation with a neighbor and ask them at least 3 questions that help you get to know them better; don’t look at your phone the whole time.

Wonder Ovens – What Are They?

Have you heard about Wonder Ovens and their capacity to conserve fuel in a survival situation? A Wonder Oven (also called a Wonder Box, Hot Box or back in pioneer times a “Hay Box”) is a set of pillows, a larger pillow for the bottom and a smaller pillow to fit on top, which are filled with Styrofoam beads. These pillows are used to retain temperature for a long period of time. While a Wonder Oven doesn’t actively heat the food to temperature, after it’s heated, it’s able to hold that temperature for many hours. Slow-cooking in style, it’s comparable to a “crock pot” but requires no power.
